Grierson Trust opens awards for submissions and calls for more diversity

Grierson documentary awards 2016The 2016 British Documentary Awards are now open for submissions. The Grierson Trust has made its annual call for entries to the most sought-after awards in the UK’s documentary calendar, better known as The Griersons, highlighting at the same time the need for more diversity in the industry.

This year there are 14 award categories with two new categories added. Best Constructed Documentary Series is a new category for programmes that examine the actions or behavior of individuals within a created format or constructed environment and Best Science or Natural History has been split out into two different categories to better reflect the significance of both programme genres.

Lorraine Heggessey, chairman of The Grierson Trust said: “Constructed Documentary is a hugely popular and growing genre of filmmaking which marries broad appeal with often ground-breaking and innovative science, history or social experiments. Series such as First Dates, Bear Grylls: Mission Survive 2016 and The Real Marigold Hotel have mass viewer appeal and have created some of the most talked about TV moments of the year. We decided it was time to also value their filmmaking merit.

“While welcoming entries into all our categories, I would also like to actively encourage more broadcasters to enter films with BAME and female talent. As an industry body we would like to see a much wider variety of filmmakers both behind and in front of the camera entered which more accurately reflect the industry we champion and celebrate.”

To enter the competition a documentary has to have had their first UK screening between 1 May 2015 and 30 April 2016. This includes scheduled screenings within recognised film, television and documentary festivals, plus, entries are accepted for both analogue and digital platforms – such as Netflix, iPlayer, Amazon – as long as the screening was accessible by a UK-based audience.

The closing date for entries is 31 May 2016
